My name is Terese Jurgensen, and the presentation for the 1:1 Conference is a compilation of years of experience in working with challenging students in our communities and school systems who are from various ages, grades, races, classrooms, schools and cultures. These students’ struggles range from violent-disruptive behaviors to learning disabilities, executive functioning deficits, social-communication challenges, mental health issues, and/or a lack of stamina or motivation. As schools across the nation struggle to educate all students at high levels, the question is, do these students’ struggles arise from brain-based/cognitive deficits that lack the cognitive SKILLS to be successful? Or do the struggles arise because they did not have the WILL (Social/Emotional Needs - Matters of the Heart) to be successful? Or could it be both? Kelly Sorenson and I invite you to our presentation that will outline brain-based cognitive information, how our society and culture is affecting our students' brains and our experiences in using 1:1 technology resources purposefully and wisely to support students.
