The Iowa 1:1 Institute exists to:
  • Help the Midwest’s 1:1 districts learn from each other about innovative teaching, learning, and administrative practices that are occurring in their districts;
  • Build excitement and ‘buzz’ around 1:1 laptop computing initiatives in the Midwest; and
  • Help others who are interested in 1:1 computing learn more about how to get started and be successful.
The institute is open to anyone interested in 1:1 laptop computing initiatives in P-12 schools, whether they currently are working in such a program or just want to learn more.

As an avid educator and gamer, I made an interesting discovery early in my career: there is an amazing overlap between modern educational pedagogy and modern game design. This discovery lead to my work to integrate my gaming experiences into my educational practices. Over the last decade, I have studied and developed various gamification techniques in order to better engage my students and encourage greater retention.

And I am not alone...

Gamification has become a major concept in education over the course of the last ten years. In my presentation, we will discuss why this has become such a powerful movement, what I have done in my own classroom practices, and how attendees can start their own adventure in using gamification with their own students.

Educational Background:
I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in Mathematics Education and a MA in Educational Psychology. In 2012, I was presented with the Robert E. Yager Award for Exemplary Teaching in Mathematics which led to my position on the advisory council for the Center of Educational Transformation. I currently teach at Williamsburg High School.
